HUMANAIZER

installation, synthesizer, halo, projection, 2024

Who are we in a capitalist world?

A number in social statistics, a code in bureaucratic spreadsheets, a bank account number. Humanaizer critiques bureaucratic power that calculates and categorizes us, both in life and death. This installation has three parts:
  • 1. The Humanaizer—a sound source/synthesizer.
  • 2. A halo above the DJ station.
  • 3. A projection.

The main technical method is sonification, turning data into sound. Using Raspberry Pi and Arduino microcontrollers, I process live statistical data about human suffering and death caused by the capitalist system.

The synthesizer displays real-time stats on seven screens, like the number of deaths from hunger. Each statistic has its own sound, carefully chosen to reflect its meaning.

Seven buttons control the composition, turning individual “tracks” on or off. Additional knobs allow for playful audio experimentation, altering the soundscape.

The halo above the DJ—or perhaps the Demiurge—displays a coded message: No gods, no masters. The projection shows data in a news ticker format, replacing typical abstract visuals at techno events. And the music plays.

And the music plays.
